A door · how you verify

Nothing here asks you to believe it. Sit still and find out.

The door where you stop taking anyone's word for anything, including ours.

Every other door here makes a claim you could argue with. This one is how you check. Sit still, stay honest, and watch what is here — not what you were told, and not what you hope for.

The instruction is smaller than people expect. Sit down. Do not adjust your breathing, do not repeat anything, do not aim at a state. No technique to get right, so nothing to fail at.

Then check one thing at a time. Thoughts arrive without being ordered — watch a few and see. Notice that something is aware of them, and whether it changed while they changed. This is your own data on a question you have only heard others answer.

People who sit still do not all report the same finding. Some say there was a presence and they were met. Some say they looked for anyone at the centre and found nobody, and that this was a relief. We will not tell you which to expect. Expecting one is the fastest way to miss what is there.

It is the oldest experiment there is, and the lab is open tonight.

The practice

90 seconds

Stop where you are. Let your eyes rest on one thing without studying it. Watch one breath the whole way in and out, without changing its length. Then ask: what is aware right now? Do not answer. Leave it open and go back to your day.

10 minutes

Sit somewhere you will not be interrupted. Set a timer so you are not managing the clock. Sit still with no technique, eyes open or closed. Let thoughts come and go. When you notice you were carried off, that noticing is the practice working. Afterwards write one sentence: what was here, in plain words.

A season

Ten minutes at roughly the same hour each day, one sentence written after. Read them back in a couple of months. Nothing is being kept going — a three-week gap costs nothing, and the day you come back is not behind the day you left. Look for one thing: did anything you were told here turn out to be true?

A plain caution. Extended silence can be destabilising, and looking closely at who you are can bring up grief or fear you did not expect. If sitting still becomes distressing, stop — open your eyes, stand up, go and be with someone. This site is not therapy and is not medical advice. If you live with a mental health condition, talk to a professional first.

What it does to Tuesday

The gap gets longer. Something annoying happens and there is now a half-second before you react — small, but that half-second is where every decent response you have made lives. The familiar spiral about money still starts, but you see it start, and that is often enough.

Honest difficulties

I sat there and nothing happened. I must be bad at this.

Nothing happening is not a failure. It is the most common report there is. The trouble is not your sitting — it is the word happened. You arrived expecting an event: a light, a calm, a breakthrough. None came, so you graded yourself.

Look at what you did observe. Thoughts came without you ordering them. Boredom arrived and left on its own. Something was aware of all of it, and you did not have to produce it — it was already running before you sat down. That is the data set, quiet by nature.

No skill is being acquired here, so there is nobody to be bad at it. A restless sitting and a peaceful one both give you the one thing on offer: a direct look.

Two other things go wrong. One is using stillness to hide: if you are sitting instead of making the phone call, this has become a calm way of avoiding your life. The other is the dry stretch — sit for less time rather than stopping.

The invitation

You have been told a great deal. You have checked almost none of it.

Think how much of what you believe about yourself came from somebody else — your family, your work, a bad year, a stranger's opinion that landed at the wrong moment. Most of it was absorbed and then defended, never tested. This question is different. What you would be checking needs no equipment and no permission.

So do not believe a word of this page. Sit tonight for ten minutes with nothing to achieve, watch honestly, and write one plain sentence about what was there. Then ask: what was aware of all of it?
