A door · who you are

Anything you can watch, you are not.

The thoughts are loud and they are not you. Something quieter has been watching them all day. This door goes straight there.

Right now there is a stream of commentary running. It narrates, it plans, it replays an argument from four years ago for no reason. Most people take that stream to be themselves, which is why a bad thought feels like an emergency.

Try the subtraction. Your hands are yours, but you can watch them, so they are not the one watching. Your mood is yours, and you can watch it rise and fall, so it is not the one watching either. The same goes for the plans, the worry, the taste of coffee. Take away everything you could observe. Something is left over, and it was doing the observing the whole time.

That is a report of what the practice turns up, not a theory to believe. What you find has no opinion about the old argument. It was not anxious a moment before you looked, and it is not in danger now. It is not a skill and it is not new. Nothing here is acquired — you return to it, and stop taking the commentary to be you.

Where this door and another part ways

Another door here reports that if you go looking for a self that stands on its own, you will not find one, and that this is the good news. This door reports that when you subtract everything you can watch, something remains. Careful people tested both and did not arrive at one answer. We will not smooth that over. Both would tell you to stop reading and run the ninety seconds below.

90 seconds

Sit however you already are. When a thought shows up, say inwardly: a thought. Not good, not bad, not mine. Just — a thought. Do that for about a minute. Then ask once, without hunting for words: what is aware right now? Do not answer it. Notice what happens in the half second after you ask.

10 minutes

Same labelling, longer. Then do the subtraction one piece at a time. The sounds in the room — watched, so not the watcher. The feeling in the chest — watched, so not the watcher. The voice doing the subtracting — also watched. Keep going until you run out of things to remove, then rest as whatever is left. Losing it and returning is the practice.

A season

Three times a day, ask the question for the length of one breath. Morning, afternoon, last thing at night. It will not feel like much for a long stretch, and then one Tuesday somebody will be shouting and you will notice the shouting arriving in something perfectly still. Day one and day two hundred are the same practice.

A plain caution. Looking directly at what you are can be destabilising for some people. If this brings dread, panic, or a sense of coming apart, stop. Open your eyes, stand up, call someone. That is the right response, not a failure of nerve. This site is not therapy and not medical advice. If you are living with something serious, do this alongside proper care, never instead of it.

What it does to Tuesday

A message lands at 4pm and your chest drops. Before, the drop and you were one item, and the next two hours belonged to it. Now there is a gap the width of a hair. The drop happens, and something registers it. You still feel it fully — this does not make you numb. But you answer from the gap, and that answer is almost always better.

The same gap shows up at home. Your child interrupts the important thought. Irritation flashes, you see it flash, and it does not have to become a tone of voice you apologise for at bedtime.

Honest difficulties

The strongest objection: this makes people cold.

It can, and when it does it is being done wrong. Watching gets used as a place to hide — you stay calm above your own life and call the distance depth. The check: are you closer to the people you live with, or further away? Distance is an error, not progress.

The other misuse is avoidance. Sitting still is an excellent way to not have the conversation you owe someone. If the hard talk keeps being postponed, the practice has become a hiding place. Have the talk, then sit.

There will be dry stretches where the question is flat and nothing answers. Everyone hits them. Keep it short, or set it down. Picking it up after a year costs nothing, and no one is counting.

Watch for the pleasant feeling of being ahead of other people. That is the commentary again, in better clothes. Notice it, say the word thought, carry on.

The invitation

You have already met this. There was a morning by water, or the second after a near miss, when the commentary stopped and things were simply clear. You probably filed it under a good mood. It was not a mood. It was the ordinary state of what you are, showing through a gap in the noise. You cannot lose it, because it is what is reading this line.

Whatever is watching was never in danger.
